Analysing Smart Water Meters at Brabant Water

Stijn de Jong
Advisor Water Supply, Brabant Water

At Brabant Water, most of us were still using spreadsheets to clean, analyse, and model our data. Thanks to Data Science Workshops, who delivered an engaging, hands-on workshop at our office, many of us have switched to Python and Jupyter Notebook, which allows our analyses to be much more advanced and reliable.

Training and Coaching EQUATE’s Six Sigma Department

  • Industry: Oil & Energy

Al Ahmadi, Kuwait, 28 September 2017 — EQUATE Petrochemical Company شركة ايكويت للبتروكيماويات, a global producer of petrochemicals, has a data-driven approach to innovation. We are proud to help them upgrade their data science skills through training and coaching.

In five days, through a combination of hands-on workshops and project work, analysts learned to use the R programming language for data visualisation and machine learning. All participants successfully completed the first data science course at their main office in Kuwait.

The 5-day workshop Data Science with R gave us a glimpse of the possibilities that R has to offer. During the workshop we got to work on actual current projects under the supervision of Jeroen, which was very insightful. Jeroen gave us a lot of practical examples and tips. We’re not quite there yet, but Data Science Workshops gave us a head start!

Training and Coaching KPN’s Data & Analytics Department

Wouter Egberink
Manager Commercial Analytics, KPN

Data Science Workshops organised for KPN a ten-week course on Data Science with R. The combination of training, on-site coaching, and remote support ensured that our analysts are applying the new knowledge and skills in their daily projects. For instance, they’re now capable to implement complex predictive models using R. We’re looking forward to the follow-up course on Advanced Machine Learning.

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 30 January 2018 — KPN has been using R for a long time, but recently expressed interest in learning more about Python. So, for that reason, we organised an Inspiration Session for a large group of people. In one hour we discussed things such as:

  • Why bother learning a programming language for doing data science?
  • What are the advantages of Python? How does it compare to R?
  • Where is Python used effectively? Is it being thought at universities?
  • Which Python packages are good for visualisations and machine learning?
  • How can developers and analysts work more closely together?
  • What are good ways to learn more about this?

These are all valid questions; questions that you may have as well. An inspiration session by Data Science Workshops is a great way to get answers quickly and to discuss your own situation with an expert.

Leveraging Big Data with Apache Spark at KPN ICT Consulting

Amersfoort, the Netherlands, 22 June 2018 — Data Science Workshops developed and delivered an in-company training about PySpark to fourteen Young Professionals at KPN ICT Consulting.

On day one, we ensured that everybody had a good understanding of the fundamental Python concepts such as list comprehensions and lambda functions. In the remaining three days, we covered nearly every Spark topic ranging from preparing data with RDDs and DataFrames to doing machine learning with Estimators and Pipelines.

Training ProRail’s DataLab in Spark, Python, Linux, and Machine Learning

  • Industry: Transportation
  • Founded: 2003
  • Headquarters: Utrecht, the Netherlands
  • Employees: 3,000+
  • Website: https://www.prorail.nl

Utrecht, the Netherlands, 17 July 2017 — Both ProRail and Nederlandse Spoorwegen have a Hadoop cluster to analyse the vast amounts of data they produce and collect. In order to be able to make the most of these clusters, thirteen of their data scientists participated in our PySpark training.

In three days we covered the Spark architecture, the RDD and DataFrame APIs, and machine learning. To put this new knowledge to the test, we worked through two real-world use cases based on their own data. It’s wonderful to see these two organisations learning and working together.

Laurens Koppenol
Lead Data Scientist, ProRail

Our DataLab team enjoyed a three-day PySpark course from Jeroen. Jeroen’s approach is personal and professional. I recommend Data Science Workshops to anyone in the field of data science.

Making Engineers Proficient at the Linux Command Line

Marc Canaleta

Besides demonstrating a good knowledge and experience in command-line tools for data science, the instructor had very good training skills, clear communication, and managed to adapt the level of the training to the level of the audience, which is not always easy!

Demonstrating Unix Power Tools at SURFnet

  • Industry: Information Technology and Services
  • Founded: 1988
  • Headquarters: Utrecht, the Netherlands
  • Employees: 150+
  • Website: https://www.surfnet.nl

Utrecht, the Netherlands, 24 September 2018 — Even though we started teaching Data Science at the Command Line four years ago, it remains a pleasure to show others what this time-tested technology can do with data. Probably because we very often learn new things from the participants!

Joost van Dijk
Manager Middleware Services, SURFnet

As a seasoned UNIX command line adept, I didn’t expect to learn much from a Data Science at the Command Line workshop. I was wrong! Over the years, many new tools have become available that I didn’t know about, and that can be combined with traditional tools in new ways.

Since attending the workshop, I have been able to simplify and improve the efficiency of many of the scripts I use on a daily basis. Recommended for anyone working from the command line, newbies and ninjas alike!

Data Hackathon for Transavia’s Data Fleet

  • Industry: Aviation
  • Founded: 1965
  • Headquarters: Schiphol, the Netherlands
  • Employees: 2,000+
  • Website: https://www.transavia.com

Schiphol, the Netherlands, 13 February 2018 — We look back on a very successful, two-day hackathon for Transavia’s data fleet. Twelve data scientists, spread over four teams, hacked away on the same data set, while each team focused on different aspects of the data science process: data visualisation, feature engineering, machine learning, and designing a prediction API.

Unlike most hackathons, this one was not set up as a competition. Instead, the goal was to inspire yourself and others, hone your Python and data science skills, and, most importantly, have fun. All we can say is that everybody easily achieved that goal!

Throughout the hackathon, we held mini workshops of 30 minutes about specific topics such as: Jupyter Notebook, manipulating data with Pandas, visualising data with Python, and designing RESTful APIs using Flask. This way, we achieved a good balance between figuring something out yourself through hacking and quickly becoming acquainted with a topic or package through training.

Charles Verstegen
Head of Partner Sales and Data & Analytics, Transavia

Data Science Workshops facilitated a data hackathon for the data team of Transavia. They made sure it was inspiring, helpful, and leading to valuable insights in the way of working with Python for multiple projects and analyses that Transavia is currently implementing.

Boris Stapel
Trainee Data Scientist, Xomnia

Data Science Workshops organised a training at the Xomnia office in Amsterdam about web scraping using R and the rvest package. We acquired all the knowledge and skills required to successfully bring theory into practice. In addition, this training inspired to get the most out of R by using the various packages from the Tidyverse.
